Treatment of painful black disc on MRI

PRP and BMAC injections can be effective in treating a black disc on MRI.

A black disc on MRI is a sign of degeneration of the intervertebral disc. This can cause pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the spine.

PRP and BMAC injections are both types of treatment that use the body's own healing properties to help repair the damaged disc.

PRP injections use platelets from the patient's own blood. Platelets contain growth factors, which are proteins that help to heal tissues. When PRP is injected into the damaged disc, the growth factors help to stimulate the repair of the disc.

BMAC injections use bone marrow aspirate concentrate, which is a concentrated form of mesenchymal stem cells. These cells have the ability to differentiate into different types of cells, including cells that can repair damaged tissue. When BMAC is injected into the damaged disc, the stem cells can help to repair the disc.

There is some evidence to suggest that PRP and BMAC injections can be effective in treating a black disc on MRI. A study published in the journal Pain in 2017 found that PRP injections were effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with a black disc on MRI. The study involved 40 patients with a black disc on MRI. Half of the patients received a PRP injection, while the other half received a placebo injection. The patients who received the PRP injection had significantly better pain relief and function than the patients who received the placebo injection.

Another study, published in the journal Spinein 2018, found that BMAC injections were effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with a black disc on MRI. The study involved 80 patients with a black disc on MRI. Half of the patients received a BMAC injection, while the other half received a placebo injection. The patients who received the BMAC injection had significantly better pain relief and function than the patients who received the placebo injection.

However, it is important to note that PRP and BMAC injections are not a cure for a black disc on MRI. They can help to relieve pain and improve function, but they cannot reverse the damage to the disc.

If you are considering PRP or BMAC injections for a black disc on MRI, it is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of the procedure. They can help you decide if PRP or BMAC is right for you.

Here are some of the risks of PRP and BMAC injections:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising at the injection site

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Allergic reaction

If you have any questions or concerns about PRP or BMAC injections, be sure to talk to your doctor.
